The Żywa Torpeda was a small, cylindrical torpedo with a length of about 6 meters and a diameter of about 50 centimeters. It was powered by an electric motor and could reach a speed of up to 6 knots.

The torpedo's most distinctive feature was its two-man crew. The driver sat in the front, controlling the torpedo's direction and speed. Behind him, the diver sat in a small compartment, equipped with a rebreather and a cutting torch.

Training and Missions

The men who volunteered to operate the Żywa Torpeda underwent rigorous training. They learned to control the torpedo, use the cutting torch, and withstand the extreme conditions inside the cramped compartment.

The first combat mission of the Żywa Torpeda took place in September 1942. A team of Polish divers attacked the German battleship Tirpitz, which was anchored in Trondheim, Norway. The mission was a success, and the Tirpitz was damaged beyond repair.

The Żywa Torpeda went on to participate in several other missions, including attacks on German U-boat pens and merchant ships. The Polish divers achieved remarkable success, sinking or damaging several German vessels.
